Black Stilt (South Island, New Zealand)

__

The black stilt, endemic to New Zealand, is one of the world's most endangered birds. Its population droped to only 23 adult birds in 1981 owing to human degradation of their environment and predation by invasive mammalians. It remains the world's rarest wading bird.
